Friday's district power outage provided an interesting social experiment.
It brought to light our reliance on technology/electronic aides; our ability to amuse ourselves.
Here at The Loxton News office, no power meant no lights, phones, computers, printers or faxes – it essentially put a stop to any work.
In homes, it meant no air-conditioners, televisions or radios – and on a warm afternoon during the school holidays it left a lot of bored, hot children.
Many families sought refuge at the swimming pool, and it was heartening to see that good ol’ fashioned fun was still considered an option.
Chatting with pool manager Chris Row, she said it was the busiest day of the school holidays and was "amazed" to see so many people.
It is all too easy to shut ourselves inside under the air-conditioner on a hot day, watching a dvd or playing on the computer.
The power outage was just the nudge to get many children enjoying their final day of the holidays outside.
